National Miner’s Day: An annual reminder about the importance of mine safety

mine safety inspection softwareToday is a notable day for mine safety – for three reasons. First, it’s the anniversary of one of the worst mine disasters in history – the 1907 Monongah mine disaster. Second, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is expected to deliver the results of its investigation into the Upper Big Branch mine disaster at the National Mine Health and Safety Academy. And the third reason…

It’s National Miner’s Day.

As the people behind the world’s leading inspection and safety compliance management software, we have to appreciate and celebrate a day that honours the contributions of miners throughout history. It’s one of the most dangerous jobs on earth, and improving safety for miners has always been a challenge. National Miner’s Day serves as a reminder that effective safety management is more important than ever.

National Miner’s Day became an official annual event only a few years ago, following efforts led by West Virginia Congressman Nick Rahall. Here is what he had to say shortly after introducing the resolution to create a National Miner’s Day in 2008:

“Throughout our nation’s history, the American miner has risked life and limb in order to produce the raw materials that fuel our economy, the energy that heats our homes, and the resources that ensure our security. Without these selfless and dedicated miners, American society would never have flourished, nor would it continue to function. It is fitting, therefore, that we recognize and honor these brave workers who have served our nation quietly and faithfully for so many years… The role of the miner is just as important today as it was 100 years ago to our state and to our nation. Celebrating a National Miner’s Day is a simple, yet very important, way a grateful nation can acknowledge these men and women who have done so much for us and will continue to do even more throughout our future.”

It’s great to see some mentions of National Miner’s Day in the news, and we’ve seen a lot of people recognizing the occasion on Facebook and Twitter. Why not help spread the word about National Miner’s Day by posting a message online?
