Field ID at TechAdvantage 2014!

TechAdvantage 2014 is underway this week, and Field ID is extremely excited to be part of it!

TechAdvantage is at the forefront of innovation, delivering critical technologies that are transforming the world of engineering, information technology, energy services, operations, supply management and business. The largest event of its kind for electric and energy cooperative professionals, it’s four days of leading-edge strategies and best practices created to share and demonstrate advantages in science, technology and other industry areas that will benefit Co-op Nation well into the 21st century.

We’re at booth #760, and we’ll be handing out Field ID branded smartphone cases and hosting a random giveaway for a Google Nexus 7 tablet. If you or someone you know is in the Nashville, Tennessee area, drop by the Field ID booth and we’ll hook you up with a pretty sweet smartphone case!

Hidden costs of cloud computing and how to avoid them

Four out of five small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are now discussing or implementing cloud computing to gain access to benefits such as “outright savings in their purchasing costs and operational expenses to improved business agility and greater preparedness for disaster,” according to a new study.

It’s more proof of what we’ve known for quite some time: the advantages of the cloud are far too great to ignore when it comes to doing smart business. However, the report goes beyond praising cloud-based solutions and offers insight into what hidden costs are involved.

The report, “Avoiding the Hidden Costs of the Cloud,” includes data from a survey of business and IT executives at 3,236 organizations in 29 countries. Commissioned by Symantec, the research spanned companies with a range of five to 5,000 employees, although this report focuses on the 1,358 small to medium sized businesses that participated.

So what exactly are the hidden costs? And what can you do about them? Here are some of the issues, with a few ideas of our own on how to get past them. Read More

Field ID at NSC 2013 – the journey begins!

Anyone who’s followed Modern Safety for long knows we get really excited about the NSC Congress & Expo. Today’s the first big day of the conference, and our team is on the ground in Chicago meeting with safety professionals from across North America.

While we will have a few posts about the people we’re meeting and hearing at NSC 2013, we thought our first thoughts on this year’s conference might best be summed up by some of the Tweets we’ve shared so far.

Digital vulnerability and the safety of your data

Hacked websites, technology vulnerabilities exposed, and other stories that raise questions about the safety of our digital information appear on a regular basis these days.

In light of a few recent stories affecting smartphones and mobile technology users, questions about the safety of data and mobile devices are worth asking. Mobile innovation has led to many safety and security issues, but the protection of your information is also more sophisticated than it’s ever been.

It’s important to know where you stand with the digital products you use. Read More

Happy Canada Day from the team at Field ID!

Our team is celebrating Canada Day today. Across the country, we’re observing fireworks, parades, concerts and more.

While some of us here at Field ID are out of the office for the national holiday, we  have team members available in office at our Toronto headquarters to speak with users, answer any incoming support requests, and generally take care of things.

And here at Modern Safety, we had to mark the occasion with a very sincere “Happy Canada Day!” to all of our users who may be celebrating with barbecues, live music or just a special day with family.

We hope everyone enjoys themselves, but as always, stay safe!

Q&A: Digital lockout/tagout with Field ID (Part 3)

Making digital lockout/tagout processes easy to complete is actually a huge job. Before you can even start with the digital work, you have to take a close look at how people perform lockout/tagout processes in the real world. What steps do they go through? What challenges do they encounter? How do they ensure the whole lockout/tagout process is managed effectively and without error?

These are some of the questions we explored when planning our newly launched software feature for lockout/tagout with help from Master Lock Company. Going digital with lockout/tagout meant a lot of work including team members at both Field ID and Master Lock. And in continuing our Q&A with Field ID’s Matthew Paterson, that’s where we begin with today’s post… Read More

Q&A: Digital lockout/tagout with Field ID (Part 2)

In the past, when Field ID launched our apps for Google Android and Apple iOS, Matt Paterson introduced screenshots and notes here at Modern Safety. He also blogs regularly at customers.fieldid.com to let our users know exactly what’s included when each new round of updates to Field ID is released.

It only makes sense for some details to come straight from our Director of Product Management!

This week, as the team launched the new lockout/tagout feature in Field ID, we thought we’d try something new! And so yesterday, we posted the first in a series of Q&A posts with Matt. Today, we continue with Part 2 of that interview.

Q&A: Digital lockout/tagout with Field ID (Part 1)

Modern Safety readers may have noticed a popular theme this week as the team at Field ID launched our new digital lockout/tagout feature.

Lockout/tagout is an extremely important issue that affects many safety managers, and it also draws the attention each year in OSHA’s list of most frequently cited violations. In addition to our official press release about the feature launch, we’ve been featuring a special lockout/tagout interview series with the Global Product Manager from Master Lock Company and sharing related news and facts.

But for us, a new feature launch for a solution as important as lockout/tagout wouldn’t be complete without a word with Matt Paterson, Director of Product Management here at Field ID’s Toronto headquarters. So the team members behind Modern Safety came up with a few questions for Matt, and here’s what he had to say… Read More

Lockout/tagout safety, Master Lock, and Field ID (Part 2)

Ensuring lockout/tagout (LOTO) safety is a complex process and that’s why there’s many things that can be missed or can go wrong. According to OSHA, “compliance with the lockout/tagout standard prevents an estimated 120 fatalities and 50,000 injuries each year.” However it remains one of the most frequently cited safety violations today.

What can go wrong and what can be done about it? Read on for an interview with Matthew T. Dudgeon, the Global Product Manager at Master Lock…

Field ID safety app and Google Play – Happy Birthday!

You may have noticed that a special birthday was marked earlier this week. On Wednesday, March 6th, 2013, Google Play celebrated its one year anniversary! Android has been around for years and celebrates its birthday every November, but it’s been 12 months since Google officially re-branded the Android Market to its current form. After thinking about it, we realized, “Wait a minute! Our safety app in the Apple App Store, Field ID for iPad, must have a birthday coming up too!”

In a mobile world, things change fast, and one year can mean a lot of changes and improvements for a team like ours. Field ID for the iPad officially launched on March 8, 2012 and was a fundamental shift toward supporting Field ID for the iPhone and Field ID for Android on a variety of new devices, including smartphones and tablets.

Our team is working hard on the small things that make a difference and add value in every change we make. Every six weeks or so, our product reflects new feedback from our users and new ideas from our software engineers. So today seems like a perfect occasion to share a few great screenshots from our safety apps, both past and present.
