Why Does Field ID Need a Project Manager?

Safety Compliance Project Manager

I suspect most of our blog readers do not frequent the careers section of the Field ID website.  If you have you would know that we are doing a lot of hiring.  One of the roles we are very eager to fill is the one for a project manager.  Why do we need a project manager at Field ID?  There are a whole bunch of reasons, but they all lead to one thing – customer success.  Below are a three reasons we are adding a project manager to our team.

1. Kick off is Critical

You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression.  The first few months of using any new software is the most important.  Whether it’s inspection software like Field ID for safety inspections or a new billing system there is bound to be a learning curve.  We strive to make Field ID as easy to use as possible to reduce this learning curve.  A project manager is there to guide you, step-by-step, to get up up and running easier and faster.

2. Ease of Use is not ONLY in Features

We realize ease of use is not ONLY accomplished through improved blank slates and more functional web pages.  Ease of use should also include support (check out our support options) and having an experienced project manager improves these support options for our customers.  Having someone guide you through your implementation definitely makes it easier.

3. Everyone’s Unique

Don’t get me wrong, we have been helping our customers with their implementation since day one.  But, as we get more diverse customers we realize that everyone’s unique.  We may have 10 customers that are all performing fire extinguisher inspections, but they all have unique requirements.  All Field ID users are unique, and we try really hard to make Field ID as configurable as possible.  Having a project manager that understands our customers unique requirements means your Field ID account will be tuned to your exact needs.

Improving Field ID Customer Support

Field ID Support of Safety InspectionsAt Field ID, we are always trying to improve our customer support options, and this past Friday we received a BIG upgrade to our online support portal.  We have been waiting for this update for a while so are very excited to finally have a better tool for online support.  Never has it been easier to get the help you need for Field ID.  Below is a list of resources you have available for support through this updated online portal.

Submit Help Tickets Online

This is the best and fastest way to get help when you need it.  Although it may not seem like it, you will get a much faster resolution to any problem faster by submitting a ticket than you would calling phone support.  Typically when you call in we need some details about your issue and enter those details in to the system.  If you submit the ticket online we are one step ahead.  Not only will we get the information needed to assist you, but you will have an audit trail of the issue.

Search the Knowledgebase

A nice big search bar appears across the entire top of the page.  This will search our knowledgebase.  We have some content in the knowledgebase now but we are working hard to fill it with more useful information.  As we bump into common problems we will add resolutions to those problems in the knowledgebase.  We also provide information on the different hand held devices and scanners we support here.

Access the Latest Field ID News

Instant access to all the Field ID product and safety news.  This includes information about Field ID updates and also provides release notes for all updates as well.  Wondering what changed in the latest update to Field ID?  This is where you will find it.

Field ID Live Support

Experimenting With Live Support

We are experimenting with live support, but for the moment it is offline.  If we do offer Live Support we want it to be 100%.  We put a lot of work into supporting our customers to the best of our abilities.  As we build our team to be able to respond to instant online support requests, we will hopefully turn it on.

We will continue to experiment and attempt to improve our self-serve support options.  If you have seen the Field ID University evolve over time, you know we are not afraid to change things up to make them better.  Stay tuned!

Online vs. On-Site Training: Why On-Site Training Just Doesn’t Make the Cut Anymore

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Allow me to share with you, a rather upsetting situation I found myself in recently: One day, I get home from work, grab a cup of java from my kitchen, and decided to run my daily routine of checking my email before grabbing some dinner. To my surprise, my friend sent me an invite to Google Wave, and being the computer geek that I am, I (of course!) accepted.

This might be quite embarrassing to admit, but 25 minutes into playing with Google Wave, I had no idea what I was supposed to do with it. Not to say that Google is to blame (I love you Google!) , Wave is indeed quite interesting. But this unfortunate incident, leads me to my next blog post:

Have you ever bought something new toy, or signed up to some new website, and had no idea how to use it? Remember the fear? The confusion? The “Oh my god, I think I just deleted everything!”  That was me. When I started using Field ID, I had no idea what was heads and what was tails. Luckily for you, you will never have to experience the same thing. Our Field ID team has dedicated themselves to make learning our software as easy as possible. This includes our online webinar training.

Most people believe that there is no way that online training could ever substitute face-to-face training done on-site. Today, I’m here to tell you why online training has been perfected to become a worthy opponent to on-site training, maybe even its successor:

Time Efficiency

You are busy. Time means productivity. Do you have extra time to gather all your staff together for hours to listen to a lecture on software? Of course not, and we know you don’t want to learn it alone, it’s difficult and tedious. But we would never leave you hanging: Field ID gives you half-hour training sessions on GoToMeeting, allowing you to learn what you need, speak to a professional and ask questions. If some of your team members can’t make the meeting, we record all of our sessions and make it available on our Field ID University website. So whenever your team has a half-hour to spare, they can watch the session.

On-site training doesn’t have the time flexibility that only online training can provide. To learn more about GoToMeeting, click here.

Cost Efficiency

Travel costs aside, on-site training requires your team to join together and put aside work for several days. What does that mean for you? Halted productivity. You have tight deadlines and projects to finish, meaning you have money to make, and we definitely understand that. The last thing we want to do, is get in the way of your productivity. All you need for an online session is the internet and a phone line, two things you already have and don’t need to pay extra for.

On-site training requires extra costs. It may require transportation costs, lecture room rentals, and maybe even some refreshments after a long day of training. So on-site training results in extra costs AND halted productivity. It’s just not a practical solution when online training offers you the same outcome without the extra expenses.

Training Efficiency

Finally you ask: How effective is online training? Can you honestly say it’s as effective as on-site training? Honestly, I didn’t think that online training would ever match up to on-site training. But the truth is: online training technology has evolved. GoToMeeting provides an innovative solution to online training, allowing the trainer and trainee to interchange keyboard and mouse control and view each other screens. If you think about it, the best way to learn software is to see it happening on the computer screen, rather than someone giving you a long lecture. Field ID demonstrates the software as well as guides you through the process online. If you have a problem or a question, you can quickly share your screen to show our team exactly what is wrong. It’s quick, efficient, and actually quite fun.

If online training technology has evolved to become just as effective as onsite training, we shouldn’t dwell on on-site training purely because of tradition. It’s become rather inefficient. It’s time to move forward.

Agree/Disagree? What do you prefer? Online or On-site. Let us know!

2 Recommendations for the Workplace Safety Problems in Ontario

Friday, May 14th, 2010

According to this CBC article, the Ontario Ministry of Labour recently conducted a study to investigate workplace safety.  It was conducted over 90-days and targeted Ontario construction sites.  The study was prompted because of an accident on Christmas Eve where 4 people lost their lives in a scaffolding accident.  These studies show that we really need to modernize our safety procedures and I really think now is the right time.

The Results of the Safety Inspection Blitz

The results don’t look good.  During the blitz, more than 2,800 job sites were investigated for height-related hazards.  Out of those sites, 25% of them were shutdown immediately, shocking isn’t it?  Labour Minister Peter Fonseca said that this was “unacceptable” and everyone agrees.

3,400 orders were issued for violations related to falls.  Think fall protection harnesses and fall arrest systems.  That is about 1.2 violation orders per jobsite!  The blitz only targeted a small group of jobsites, imagine how many violations there are throughout Ontario and the rest of Canada.

Some Positive Outcomes

Apart from all the bad news, there are some positive revelations that have surfaced.  Labour Minister Peter Fonseca realizes that government inspectors can’t be everywhere at all times.  I don’t think we should ever aim for such an arrangement.  There should be programs in place to allow for more proactive safety measures.  Another positive outcome is that Peter Fonseca and Patrick Dillion from the Ontario Building and Construction Trade Council both realize that drastic measures need to be taken.

What should we do?

One of the problems I see over and over again is the fact that all safety recommendations are reactive.  Having inspectors come onto job sites at random times to find violations is a reactive step.  Ministry officials also mentioned that they would have a 1-800 number for people to call and report unsafe work environments.  This is a great initiative but it is again a reactive act.  If someone is calling in a violation or is issuing a violation, then mistakes have already been made and an accident could already have happened.  We need to find ways to prevent these violations altogether, not just find better ways to report on them.

2 Recommendations for the Ontario Ministry of Labour

We deal with individuals in the safety industry, from construction sites, to mining sites, to  offshore oil rigs.  The problems that this study has found in Ontario are similar to some recent problems found in mining or the offshore oil industry.  The Modern Safety approach is in line with solving these problems.

Recommendation 1: Mandate Digital Records

The pharmaceutical and livestock industries use digital records to provide traceable information.  Why is the safety industry so far behind?  When you think about it, knowing that a harness has been inspected (a piece of equipment that actually holds someone from falling to the ground), seems more important.  Mandating that companies require digital inspections and safety data allows proactive safety measures.  Using digital online methods to manage inspections and safety compliance allows us to know when something needs to be inspected, when it was last inspected, and how to inspect that equipment.  Right now, there is no way to quickly see what has been done to manage a job site’s safety.  You would have to sift through piles of paperwork (if it even exists) to see what has been done to increase safety.

Recommendation 2: Online Education

Patrick Dillion mentioned that mandatory entry level education should be in place for all construction workers.  That is a great idea, but not giving people the tools to make that happen easily makes it a problem.  With mandatory training you need a quick and easy way to:

  1. Train people
  2. Keep track of those who have been trained

This is a common problem throughout the safety industry and something that needs to be modernized.  Using online tools, this dilemma can be solved.  Online training is becoming a growing method for organizations to train their employees.  It’s convenient and traceable.

The Bottom Line

If Ontario wants to make a true difference, the Ministry of Labour should recommend some sweeping changes that mandate digital safety data and training.  The bottom line is that we need to modernize our safety process if we want to make a change.
